Stranger’s Language

Wandering in the streets of that new city, I had no idea what to expect. But what felt the worst is not knowing what to say nor how to. A stranger was the only identity I knew since the very beginning. Growing up, I had to figure out the vocabularies of that surrounding world. With society evolving every day, I couldn’t keep up anymore. It felt like being trapped in those first words I learned. Those first nice words that you learn as a kid, those words that define you and your future.
Too naive
That was the level of my speech. I had million other words in my mind that I could have chosen from, yet those ones, that always found their way out, were ”the simple ones”. I decided to work on my own language understanding, but the more I dug in, the more complex it got to be. With a decision to grasp as much as possible of it, I found myself getting further. I got further from the regular talk, no longer a naive, but with a complex set of thoughts. My words are fighting to get out one before the other, that they no longer made sense!
A new path
I never managed to find that sweet spot that I thought everyone is revolving around when they speak. Although I had that feeling that people are hiding behind their words, I hoped to have similar confidence as one of them. Out of the blue, everything thing started to change in my surroundings. With a chance to go out, meet new people and get to know a different culture, I had that question once again … what to say? However, with the need to communicate in a new language, it got way harder. Shall I just translate my thoughts literally in the same way I used to.
It wasn’t a hard decision. With the motivation of the new start, I decided to use that new language to escape from my past. Developing those new vocabularies, those I never used in the past, and looking with a different angle to the present with a new language, the world seemed to be different for the first time. I developed a new me through those brand-new expressions and found a strange taste for this unique experience.
